The Sarawak Labour Department is one of the Departments under the Ministry of Human Resources. This department started operating on July 26, 1960 with a strength of six (6) people. The number of members in January 2023 is 290 officers and staff. Of that number, 136 are Social Scheme (S) enforcers from Grades S19 to S54 and one JUSA C. The rest are joint positions. With the number of members, this Department is able to provide efficient and best services.
Before the establishment of Malaysia, the function of this Department was carried out by the Resident and District Offices. After 16 September 1963, the function was taken over by the Ministry of Labor at that time before being renamed the Ministry of Human Resources. The Sarawak Labor Department at that time was also known as the Sarawak Labor Department. From 29 November 2002, this Department has taken over the role of the People’s Energy Department in Sarawak. The Sarawak Labor Department was renamed the Sarawak Labor Department in 2003.
Under the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report 1962, the Sarawak Labor Commissioner who is now called the Sarawak Labour Director is directly responsible to the Honorable Minister of Human Resources through the Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Human Resources in all aspects of the enforcement and administration of labour laws in Sarawak.
On 25 January 2010, JobsMalaysia Center (JMC) in Kuching and JobsMalaysia Point (JMP) in all Labour Offices in Sarawak were established and act as a one stop center for employment services. Its main function is to assist the placement of local jobseekers through the JobsMalaysia portal platform.
The establishment of UTC, an abbreviation for Urban Transformation Centre or Pusat Transformasi Bandar, was announced by the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Finance, Tan Sri Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah on 18 July 2013. It commences operation with effect from 17 September 2014. Since then, there are 27 government agencies operating on a full-ledge basis at UTC Kuching. It is one of the government efforts and initiatives to provide the urban communities with various core government and private sector agencies services in a one-stop centre or in one premise.
On 18 July 2013, when the Urban Transformation Center (UTC) was established at Jalan Bukit Mata, Kuching, the Sarawak Labour Department also opened a small office as the JobsMalaysia Center (JMC) there before it was closed in September 2020 when the employment service function in this Department has been taken over by SOCSO. The JobsMalaysia portal has been replaced by My Future Job under SOCSO.
